You may remember that for American Diabetes Month® 2012, the American Diabetes Association rolled out the “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” mosaic. And on Monday mornings you may have seen our “images of the week” on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, showcasing just some of the amazing photos within the mosaic.
Since Oct. 1, 2012, our supporters have helped us shine a new light on the issue of diabetes and those who live with it each and every day. Thousands of photos have been uploaded to illustrate what “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” means to people affected by the disease. Together, these images capture the extraordinary effort it takes to live an ordinary day with diabetes.
Here are some of our favorite images that have been added in 2013!
This image comes from John. May 20 marked five years since his son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The previous weekend, his soccer team made it to the finals of the last tournament of the season. John calls this a “rather fitting pic”!
This is Rosalyn, who has been living with diabetes for 20 years. We just love her gorgeous smile!
Savanna submitted this photo of our friend Ryan Reed, a 19-year-old NASCAR driver with type 1 diabetes. He definitely shows others how to never give up on their dreams! Learn more about our collaboration with Ryan at http://drivetostopdiabetes.org.
When Monica was diagnosed with diabetes at age 5, she was told she may never have kids. Thirty years later, she has two beautiful babies. For her, it’s “worth all the hard work!!!”
For Nancy, “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” is her daughter Hayley, who has lived with diabetes since age 9. Here she is at her first Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes! Go Red Striders!
Jeff admits that managing diabetes day to day is “overwhelming sometimes. But I got to do it for my kids and wife.” Extraordinary effort, indeed!
To Jonathan, “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” is “hanging at the beach with my dad before diabetes took him from us.” Now he honors his father’s memory by riding in Tour de Cure and raising funds to Stop Diabetes!
So what does “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” mean to you? Whether it is yourself or a loved one, an object or a place, you can help us continue to build this mosaic that shows the true picture of diabetes.
